Project Overview: Located in a farming cluster near Cape Town, this facility serves a major local exporter of grapes and citrus. Completed and commissioned in 2023, it is a prime example of agricultural cold chain infrastructure in the Western Cape province.

 

Cold Storage Dimensions: 108m × 45m; single-story prefabricated structure; total volume approx. 6,500 m³.


Operating Temperature: +2°C to +6°C.

 

Local Climate Challenges: Cape Town features a Mediterranean climate characterized by intense sunlight, dry heat, and high temperatures in summer, alongside rainy, humid winters. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean exposes structures to mild salt spray. Most farm cold storage units are semi-exposed structures with unshielded exterior walls; constant exposure to UV radiation and sea breezes causes standard color-coated steel panels to fade, peel, and rust within approximately three years.

2.  Gauteng Province · Johannesburg | High-Altitude Meat Cold Storage

 

Project Overview: A standardized cold storage facility for meat processing in the southern industrial area of ​​Johannesburg, primarily serving local beef and lamb cutting, frozen storage, and cold chain distribution within the province. Completed and put into operation in 2022, it is well-suited for the core scenario of inland high-altitude low-temperature warehousing.

 

Cold Storage Dimensions: 86m × 36m, with high and low temperature zone design.

 

Operating Temperature: -18℃~-22℃

 

Local Climate Challenges: Johannesburg is at an altitude of 1750 meters, with a typical high-altitude climate. Extreme diurnal temperature variations occur. Long-term, significant temperature fluctuations cause condensation and frost to easily form at the joints of ordinary insulation panels, leading to cold air loss and higher electricity costs. Furthermore, South Africa's frequent power rationing places higher demands on the thermal stability of the insulation materials.

 

Suitable panel Selection: 150mm PIR (Polyisocyanurate) insulation panel is selected. Core material density ≥42kg/m³, high temperature resistance, strong thermal stability, and higher fire resistance rating. The panel surface uses 0.6mm thickened galvanized color steel plate for a more stable structure.

 

Importance of Selection and Application Effect: Extreme temperature differences and frequent power outages place high demands on the thermal stability and continuous insulation of cold storage materials. Ordinary PU panels have weak resistance to temperature differences, easily causing condensation and cold leakage under alternating day and night temperatures, increasing compressor load, resulting in high long-term energy consumption, and easily leading to temperature control failure and frozen product spoilage. PIR panels' excellent thermal stability improves the condensation problem on walls caused by large temperature differences at high altitudes, reduces the frequency of air cooler defrosting, and even under fluctuating power outage conditions, the slower cooling speed of cold storage significantly reduces operating energy consumption, ensuring the long-term storage quality of frozen goods.

3.  Port Elizabeth (Gebbeha) | Citrus Pre-cooling Processing Plant Cold Storage

 

Project Overview: This cold storage facility, part of the fruit and vegetable processing support system in the Eastern Cape Free Trade Zone, is primarily used for the pre-cooling and temperature-controlled temporary storage of citrus fruits after harvest. It is a core supporting cold chain facility for fresh fruit export trade in eastern South Africa.

 

Cold Storage Structure: Multi-compartment modular small cold storage, each compartment 400–800㎡

 

Operating Temperature: +2℃~+5℃

 

Local Climate Challenges: Distinct dry and wet seasons, large diurnal temperature differences, and semi-open factory structures lead to frequent heat exchange in the cold storage's exterior walls. O   rdinary flat-panel joints are prone to temperature cross-contamination and frost formation.

 

Suitable Material Selection: 100mm Cam-Lock panels are used throughout the building.

 

Importance of Material Selection and Application Effect: The Port Elizabeth multi-compartment modular cold storage is mainly used for the pre-cooling and storage of high-value-added citrus fruits, requiring extremely high temperature uniformity and airtightness. Ordinary flat-edge panels have large gaps at the joints, which easily lead to cold bridges. The alternating hot and cold air currents in semi-open factories exacerbate temperature cross-contamination and frost formation, resulting in uneven pre-cooling of citrus fruits, shortening their shelf life, and affecting export quality and profits.
